“No,” the person said. “Nothing. No idea where it came from. Random, strange article. ”

The person spoke to NJ Advance Media on the condition of anonymity. That “random, strange article” appeared Tuesday evening on the website for the New York Daily News. The story said Kaepernick “wants out of San Francisco” and that his “preferred destination” was the Jets. 1. The Jets are by no means established with a long term solution at quarterback, but they are expected to be able to work out a deal to keep Ryan Fitzpatrick from bolting via free agency this offseason. Both sides are on the record that they want to stay together. And those negotiations, which ought to begin fairly soon, aren’t expected to take very long. 2. Kaepernick struggled mightily in 2015 and even got benched in the latter half of the season but he’s still just four seasons removed from nearly winning a Super Bowl with the 49ers. And the 49ers just hired ex Eagles head coach Chip Kelly as their head coach, and Kelly runs the sort of read option system that seems to suit Kaepernick’s skill set. At the same time, the 49ers might be ready to move on from Kaepernick anyway. And Kaepernick, too, might be ready for a change of scenery. Which brings me to point No. 3. ALSO: What NFL coaches, scouts look for at Senior Bowl

3. Even if the Jets have any interest in Kaepernick, they would likely have to wait for the 49ers to cut him. If Kelly wants to cut Kaepernick and he just might it will almost certainly happen before that date. But if the Jets wanted to trade for Kaepernick, they’d have to give up draft picks and likely would have to get Kaepernick to rework his deal. 4. The Jets aren’t going to say boo about any of this as long as Kaepernick remains under contract with the 49ers. Tampering, you know. 5. Why would Kaepernick want to go to the Jets? Working with receivers Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker would be an obvious draw. Same with the chance to play for offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. But unless Fitzpatrick isn’t re signed a long shot at this point Kaepernick would probably have to take at least one redshirt year behind Fitzpatrick after already having to sit for the latter half of 2015. Otherwise, Kaepernick would have to take the chance that Fitzpatrick and the Jets won’t come to terms, never mind how adamant both sides have been about committing for 2016, at least. That’s Kaepernick’s “preferred destination”? Really?
